During the next week, we will premiere on our YouTube channel the documentary “Star Region: Our Skies for the World,” a production that aims to raise awareness about the dangers posed by the advance of light pollution in the night skies of the Coquimbo region.

Considered a privileged area due to its climatic characteristics, which give its skies unique qualities for astronomical observation and astrotourism, the northern regions of Chile are experiencing an alarming deterioration in the darkness of the night, due to the introduction of artificial light by humans.

Cities and industries excessively illuminated and with poorly designed lighting are putting the night and the ecosystems that rely on light-dark cycles at risk, affecting people’s health, eliminating our ability to observe the stars, and interfering with the activity of professional and tourist astronomical observatories installed in our country, which have positioned Chile as the world capital of astronomy.

The documentary narrates, with the testimony of its protagonists, scientists, communicators, and inhabitants of the Star Region, the importance that the quality of their night skies holds for them and their visitors, and raises an alert to join efforts in protecting this valuable heritage, which belongs not only to its inhabitants but to all humanity.

The production of the documentary has been carried out in conjunction with the Office for the Protection of the Quality of the Northern Chilean Skies, MediadorLab, and AstroFotografíaChile, and had the collaboration of the Municipality of Paihuano, Municipality of Río Hurtado, Municipality of Vicuña, Paihuano Municipal Tourism Corporation, Ceaza, Cancana Observatory, El Sauce Observatory “Obstech,” Galileo Observatory, Mamalluca Observatory, and Corfo.

We invite you to enjoy a preview and remind you to stay tuned for the premiere on our YouTube channel.
